The Detroit story
Jeff Bass grew up in the Detroit area and at 16 formed the R&B group Dreamboy with childhood friends; in 1980 it signed with Quincy Jones's new Qwest label and released two albums before being dropped in 1985. With his older brother Mark he then built a production team, later called F.B.T. (Funky Bass Team), that worked with George Clinton and Westbound Records. In 1992 Mark heard a young rapper freestyling on local radio and invited him to their studio; the Bass Brothers released Eminem's debut album Infinite (1996) on their Web Entertainment label and stayed at the core of his sound after he signed with Dr. Dre. Jeff produced or co-produced hits such as “Without Me” and “Beautiful”, voiced the “Public Service Announcement” intros on The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP, and co-wrote “Lose Yourself” with Eminem and Luis Resto. The song won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Original Song, and Bass shares Grammy Awards with Eminem.
