The Detroit story
Jay Daniel is a Detroit electronic musician, producer and selector, and the son of Detroit house vocalist Naomi Daniel. He belongs to the generation of young producers who grew up with the city's deep-house veterans as mentors. In September 2013 he released his first EP, Scorpio Rising, on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature label, and in February 2014 the Karmatic Equations EP on fellow Detroiter Kyle Hall's Wild Oats, launching a long creative partnership with Hall. In May 2015 he founded his own label, Watusi High, with the School Dance EP, and in 2018 released his debut album Broken Knowz on the British label Ninja Tune to strong reviews; its jazz-inflected, percussive tracks draw on Detroit's Black music history from Motown to techno. As a DJ he has played the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Boiler Room and Red Bull Music Academy events and guested on BBC Radio 1, touring the UK, Japan and Australia while continuing to collaborate with Hall and London's Funkineven.
