The Detroit story
James Pennington has been part of the Detroit techno scene since the mid-1980s, when he recorded moody, minimal tracks such as “The Groove” and “The Art of Stalking” under the name Suburban Knight, released on Derrick May's Transmat label. With their brooding atmosphere and spare drum machines, these records anticipated the darker directions techno would take in the 1990s. When Detroit's second wave arrived in the early 1990s, Pennington became an elder and mentor to “Mad” Mike Banks and the Underground Resistance crew. He released the singles “Nocturbulous Behavior” and “Dark Energy” on UR, appeared on Submerge's Depth Charge compilations and produced tracks for UR's 1998 album Interstellar Fugitives. His music also appeared in the video game Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition, which is set on the streets of Detroit. His debut album My Sol Dark Direction, mixing classics with new work, was released to critical acclaim.
