The Detroit story
Hickey was born in Midland, Michigan, and studied at St. Joseph's minor seminary in Grand Rapids before completing his studies at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1942. Ordained for the Diocese of Saginaw in 1946, he studied in Washington and Rome and served as secretary to Saginaw's bishop. He became an auxiliary bishop of Saginaw in 1967, rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome, bishop of Cleveland in 1974 and archbishop of Washington in 1980. Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal in 1988. In Washington he expanded Catholic services for the poor, the sick and people with AIDS, and he spoke out against U.S. policy in Central America and for nuclear disarmament.
