The Detroit story
Born and raised in Detroit, James Moss attended Cass Technical High School and grew up on the road with his father's group, Bill Moss and the Celestials, and with his cousins the Clark Sisters; his aunt was choir director Mattie Moss Clark. As a teenager he sang with his brother Bill Moss Jr. as the Moss Brothers, recording two albums, then spent two years at Michigan State University before returning to Detroit to pursue music. After two albums on a local Christian label, he formed the production team PAJAM with Paul Allen and Walter Kearney; through the late 1990s and 2000s PAJAM became gospel's most prolific hitmakers, blending gospel with hip-hop and R&B. He also toured with the Clark Sisters and signed with Island Records alongside his cousin Karen Clark Sheard. His own albums, The J. Moss Project (2005) and V2... (2007), featured family members and gospel stars.
