The Detroit story
Larionov had already helped force open the door for Soviet players to join the NHL when Detroit acquired him from San Jose in 1995. Coach Scotty Bowman built a five-man Russian unit around him, Sergei Fedorov, Vyacheslav Kozlov, Vladimir Konstantinov and Slava Fetisov, whose crisp puck movement helped the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup in 1997 and 1998. He left briefly for Florida before returning to Detroit the same season, and in the 2002 Stanley Cup Final he scored the winning goal in triple overtime of Game 3 against Carolina as the Red Wings claimed a third championship with him on the roster. Larionov played at Joe Louis Arena for his entire Detroit career and later settled in the area, working as a player agent based in Bloomfield Hills. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008.
