The Detroit story
Holly Miranda grew up in Detroit singing in church, started piano at six and taught herself guitar at 14, when she also began writing songs; she later added trumpet. In 2001 she recorded High Above the City, a 20-track solo album sold only at her shows. In 2003 she teamed up with producer and keyboardist Alex Lipsen, a project that grew into the Jealous Girlfriends, a four-piece band based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her solo debut, The Magician's Private Library (2010), produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, drew wide praise for its hushed, dreamy arrangements, and she has since released further solo records and collaborated with Kaki King and others.
