The Detroit story
Carr moved to Detroit with his family as a small child and grew up on the city's west side. At Northwestern High School he became a state champion sprinter, running the 100-yard dash in 9.3 seconds, a mark that drew attention from college recruiters nationwide. He left Detroit for Arizona State University, where he developed into one of the country's top sprinters, and went on to win two gold medals at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, in the 200 meters and the 4×400 meter relay. After his track career he tried professional football, including a brief 1969 tryout with the Detroit Lions that did not lead to a roster spot.
