The Detroit story
Detroit's European scouts spotted Zetterberg in Sweden and drafted him in the seventh round in 1999, a low pick the team was criticized for at the time. He made his NHL debut at Joe Louis Arena in 2002 and quickly became one of the league's best two-way forwards, part of the 'Swedish Five' unit built to echo the club's famed Russian Five. In 2008 he led Detroit to its eleventh Stanley Cup and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, then signed a twelve-year contract extension to stay in Detroit. Named team captain in 2013 succeeding Nicklas Lidström, he played through injuries into the Red Wings' new downtown arena before chronic back problems ended his career in 2018, closing out an NHL career spent entirely in one city.
