The Detroit story
Consolmagno was born in Detroit in 1952 and attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School before studying planetary science at MIT, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees, and at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, where he took his doctorate in 1978. After research posts at Harvard and MIT he spent two years with the Peace Corps in Kenya teaching astronomy and physics, then taught at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. In 1989 he entered the Society of Jesus and took vows as a brother in 1991. At the Vatican Observatory he studied meteorites and small bodies of the solar system and curated the Vatican's meteorite collection, and in 2015 he was appointed its director. A popular writer and speaker on science and faith, he is also a regular guest at science fiction conventions, including ConFusion in Michigan.
