The Detroit story
Fresh off two national championships at Duke, Hill was the third pick of the 1994 NBA draft, and he made an immediate mark, becoming the first Pistons rookie since Isiah Thomas to score 1,000 points in a season and sharing that year's Rookie of the Year award. Playing a rare "point forward" role that let him lead the Pistons in scoring, rebounding and assists, he made five straight All-Star teams in Detroit and was widely seen as the league's next great all-around star. The Pistons, though, could never get past the first round of the playoffs with him, and after a 2000 sign-and-trade sent him to Orlando, chronic ankle injuries slowed the rest of his career. He was introduced to singer Tamia in Detroit in 1996 and later married her. Hill was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018 and went on to become a team owner and basketball executive.
