The Detroit story
Detroit traded for Hanlon in July 1986, adding an experienced NHL goaltender who had already played for Vancouver, St. Louis and the New York Rangers. He split the starting job with Greg Stefan through the late 1980s, a stretch in which coach Jacques Demers led the Red Wings to consecutive Stanley Cup semifinal appearances in 1987 and 1988, the franchise's best playoff runs in years. Hanlon remained a fixture in Detroit's net into the early 1990s, leading the team in goals-against average during the 1990–91 season as a younger Tim Cheveldae began taking over the position. After retiring he built a long second career as an NHL and international coach, including as head coach of the Washington Capitals and several European national teams.
