The Detroit story
Henderson was already known across the league for his steal and game-tying layup in Game 2 of the 1984 NBA Finals for Boston when he joined the "Bad Boys" Pistons before the 1989–90 season. In Game 4 of that year's Finals against Portland, with Detroit clinging to a one-point lead in the final seconds, Henderson chose to score a fast-break layup rather than run out the clock, stretching the margin to three points; Portland nearly answered with a desperation three-pointer that officials ruled just short. The Pistons went on to win their second straight title. It proved to be Henderson's only season in Detroit, a brief but well-timed stop in a 13-year NBA career.
