The Detroit story
Sadowski was born in Detroit in 1903 into a Polish-American family and attended the city's Ferry School. After a period of high school in Foley, Alabama, he came back to Detroit and graduated from Northeastern High School in 1920, on the east side near the Polish neighborhoods, and then from the University of Detroit's law department in 1924. Admitted to the bar in 1926, he practiced law in Detroit and entered Democratic politics as the Polish community gained political weight in the city. He served in the Michigan Senate for the Detroit-based 2nd district in 1931 and 1932 and sat on the State Democratic Central Committee from 1930 to 1936. In 1932 he was elected to Congress from Michigan's 1st district, which included Hamtramck and Detroit's Polish east side, and served three terms, from 1933 to 1939. He died in Utica, Michigan, in 1961 and is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
