The Detroit story
Gary Michael Clayton was born in Dearborn and grew up in the western Wayne County suburbs. He caught the performing bug at Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights, where he appeared in many of the drama club's productions. After moving to Los Angeles he landed guest roles on television before his breakout as Tanner, the surfer-musical lead of Disney Channel's Teen Beach Movie (2013), a role he repeated in Teen Beach 2 (2015) and its soundtrack songs. In 2016 he played heartthrob Link Larkin in NBC's live television production Hairspray Live!, and he has continued to act in film, television and stage musicals.
