The Detroit story
Evan Bates was born in Ann Arbor in 1989 and grew up skating there, teaming up at eleven with Emily Samuelson; together they became world junior champions in 2008 and competed at the 2010 Olympics. He graduated from Huron High School in 2007 and, while competing, earned a degree in organizational studies from the University of Michigan in 2013. In 2010 he and Samuelson moved to coaches Igor Shpilband and Marina Zueva at the Arctic Edge rink in Canton, the western Wayne County suburb that was then a world center of ice dance. After a severed Achilles tendon and the end of that partnership, he formed a team with Madison Chock in 2011 and trained in metro Detroit until 2018, when they moved to Montreal. At the 2019 U.S. Championships at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena they took silver. Chock and Bates, who married in 2024, went on to win three world titles and Olympic team gold.
