The Detroit story
Goodfellow's rights were sold to the minor-league Detroit Olympics in 1927, and a year later he joined Detroit's NHL club, beginning a fourteen-season career with one franchise at the Olympia. A high-scoring center early on, he later moved back to defense and excelled there too. Calm and unreadable in tense moments, he was nicknamed "Poker Face". He captained the Red Wings for five seasons and won the Stanley Cup with them in 1936, 1937 and 1943. In 1939–1940 he became the first Red Wing to win the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player. Knee trouble ended his playing days in 1943. In 1959 he helped found the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association, which still raises money for children's charities, and he was once caddie master at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills. He is buried at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.
