The Detroit story
Antonelli was born in Detroit in 1967, but he grew up in Indiana and North Carolina and graduated from Douglas Byrd High School in Fayetteville. He studied aeronautics and astronautics at MIT and later earned a master's degree in the same field at the University of Washington. As a naval aviator he flew F/A-18C Hornets from the carrier USS Nimitz in support of Operation Southern Watch over Iraq, and he graduated from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. NASA selected him as an astronaut candidate in 2000. He was pilot of Discovery on STS-119, launched in March 2009, which delivered the last pair of solar array wings to the International Space Station, and of Atlantis on STS-132 in May 2010, which carried a Russian research module to the station.
