The Detroit story
Sherard Ingram was born and raised in Detroit and attended Crockett Vocational School, at first hoping to become a doctor. After high school he worked at the Detroit Recording Institute and then at Buy Rite Music, a Detroit record store, where he got to know the city's music scene and struck up a long friendship with James Stinson. In the mid-1980s he began DJing with Kenny Dixon Jr., later Moodymann, and the pair held a regular slot at the Outcast club, where Ingram developed his high-speed style, mixing techno with Miami bass and West Coast hip-hop. Stinson made him Drexciya's official touring DJ and named him Stingray; he took to wearing a SWAT-style balaclava on stage. He also founded the group Urban Tribe. After Stinson's death in 2002 he dropped the “Drexciyan” prefix and later settled in Berlin, releasing records on Tresor and his own Micron Audio label.
