The Detroit story
Costolo was born in Royal Oak, just north of Detroit, and earned a degree in computer and communication sciences at the University of Michigan in 1985. Instead of taking a tech job he moved to Chicago to perform improv comedy, then spent eight years at Andersen Consulting. He co-founded several web companies, including FeedBurner, a feed-management service that Google bought in 2007. He joined Twitter as chief operating officer in 2009 and served as CEO from 2010 to 2015, guiding the company through its 2013 stock market debut. He returned to Ann Arbor in 2013 to deliver the University of Michigan's spring commencement address. He later became a venture investor.
