The Detroit story
Dianne Reeves was born in Detroit into a family full of musicians, and she was raised in Denver, Colorado, where an uncle who played bass in the Denver Symphony encouraged her talent. She sang in her high school band, was noticed by trumpeter Clark Terry, and went on to work with Sérgio Mendes and Harry Belafonte before launching her solo career on Blue Note Records in the late 1980s. She became one of the leading jazz vocalists of her generation, winning Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammys for three consecutive albums, and she appeared on screen singing standards in George Clooney's film Good Night, and Good Luck (2005). Her tie to Detroit is her birth; she has returned to the city as a performer, including at the Detroit Jazz Festival.
