The Detroit story
Derek St. Holmes was born and raised in Riverview, a Downriver suburb of Detroit, and played in local bands as a teenager; in 1974 his group opened for the Amboy Dukes at the Lincoln Park Theater. That connection led Ted Nugent to hire him as lead singer and rhythm guitarist for his new solo band. St. Holmes sang on Nugent's 1975 debut, including “Stranglehold” and “Hey Baby,” and on the multi-platinum albums Free-for-All, Cat Scratch Fever and Double Live Gonzo! before leaving in 1978. He went on to the Whitford/St. Holmes project with Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and sang with the Michael Schenker Group. He has reunited with Nugent several times, including a guest spot at Nugent's 6,000th concert in Detroit, and has played the Dick Wagner memorial benefit concerts in Detroit.
