The Detroit story
Debbie Dingell was born in Detroit in 1953 into a family descended from Howard Fisher of the Fisher brothers, whose Fisher Body company became part of General Motors. Raised a Republican, she graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in 1975 and built a career at GM, serving as president of the General Motors Foundation and as an executive for community and government relations. In 1981 she married Congressman John Dingell, became a Democrat and settled with him in Dearborn, where she grew into a formidable Michigan party figure, serving on the Democratic National Committee and chairing Al Gore's 2000 Michigan campaign. When her husband retired in 2014 after 59 years in the House, she won his Dearborn-based seat. After redistricting in 2022 she moved to Ann Arbor to run in the new 6th district, which combines Washtenaw County with western Wayne County suburbs. In Congress she has focused on the auto industry, health care and the Great Lakes.
