The Detroit story
Darryl Granberry Jr. was born in Pontiac, the Oakland County auto city north of Detroit, and grew up making music in the studio where his father worked as an audio engineer. He was class valedictorian at International Tech Academy and enrolled at Central Michigan University, but left before his sophomore year after one of his YouTube videos went viral, moving to Hollywood to become a full-time entertainer. He had started posting videos in 2014; songs such as “Balenciagas” and “Free Parties” (2016), produced by Zaytoven, and “Givenchy” (2017) built his audience, and in 2018 he signed with Epic Records, releasing the gold single “Arguments” and the EP Take Me Serious. In 2020 he co-founded his own label, Zooted Music, and “Moonwalking in Calabasas”, remixed with Blueface, entered the Billboard Hot 100 and went double platinum. Blending internet celebrity with music, he has also streamed, starred in reality content and boxed on the YouTubers vs. TikTokers card in 2021.
