The Detroit story
Dan Kroha formed the Gories in 1986 with fellow metro Detroiters Mick Collins and Peggy O'Neill. With two guitars, a minimal drum kit and no bass, the trio played raw garage punk soaked in 1950s and 1960s blues and R&B, and it was among the first 1980s garage bands to make those blues roots obvious. Their albums Houserockin' (1989), I Know You Fine, But How You Doin' (1990) and Outta Here (1992) circulated internationally on small labels, and a 1988 Detroit show was later issued by Third Man Records as The Shaw Tapes: Live in Detroit. After the Gories split in 1992, Kroha led the glam-garage trio the Demolition Doll Rods, a fixture of 1990s Detroit clubs, and later played solo, drawing on country blues. The Gories reunited for European and North American tours in 2009 and 2010, including a show with the Oblivians at Detroit's Majestic Theatre.
