The Detroit story
The Tigers drafted Granderson in the third round in 2002 out of the University of Illinois at Chicago, and he became their everyday center fielder in 2006, the season Detroit shocked baseball by winning the American League pennant. In the division series against the Yankees and the championship series against Oakland he was one of the club's hottest hitters. In 2007 he became one of the few players in history to collect at least 20 doubles, triples, home runs and stolen bases in the same season, many of the triples coming in Comerica Park's spacious outfield. Articulate and generous with his time, he was a favorite with Detroit fans and a visible presence in community programs for young people. After the 2009 season the Tigers traded him to the Yankees in a three-team deal that brought Austin Jackson and Phil Coke to Detroit.
