The Detroit story
Born in Detroit to a family of Romanian descent, Morariu turned professional in 1994 and built her career mainly in doubles, winning the Wimbledon women's doubles title in 1999 with Lindsay Davenport and the Australian Open mixed doubles in 2001. She reached the world No. 1 doubles ranking in 2000. In 2001, at the height of her career, she was diagnosed with leukemia; Jennifer Capriati dedicated her French Open title that year to Morariu, and the WTA later created the Corina Comeback Award in her honor after she returned to the tour following chemotherapy and shoulder surgery. She retired in 2007 and became a tennis broadcaster and an ambassador for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
