The Detroit story
Clarke Scholes grew up in Detroit and starred for Redford High School, winning Detroit City League titles in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle as a senior in 1948. He went on to Michigan State University, where under coach Charles McCaffree he became a five-time All-American and three-time NCAA champion in the 100-yard freestyle. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Scholes and Japan's Hiroshi Suzuki posted identical times in the 100-meter freestyle final; officials awarded Scholes the gold medal on a judge's decision. He also won two golds at the 1955 Pan American Games and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1980. He died in Detroit in 2010.
