The Detroit story
Brown had already won Olympic gold with the U.S. team in 1988 and world championship gold in 1986 when the WNBA allocated her to the expansion Detroit Shock ahead of the league's 1998 season. She set the franchise's early rebounding standard, a mark later matched and then broken by Shock star Cheryl Ford. Midway through her second Detroit season, in July 1999, she was traded to the Utah Starzz along with teammate Korie Hlede, reportedly at both players' request. Though her Detroit tenure was brief, she remains part of the Shock's founding history.
