The Detroit story
Atkins came to Detroit from Orlando in the August 2000 sign-and-trade that sent Grant Hill away and brought back both Atkins and Ben Wallace, a deal that reshaped the Pistons for years. He spent several seasons running the point in Detroit before a 2004 three-team trade sent him to Boston and brought Rasheed Wallace to the Pistons. Atkins built a long NBA career as a backup guard for nine different teams, then returned to Detroit in September 2009 on a non-guaranteed deal, playing 40 games in his final NBA season before retiring.
