The Detroit story
Christopher George was born in Royal Oak on February 25, 1931, the son of Greek immigrants John and Vassiliki George. His father's work kept the family on the move, with stretches in St. Louis, Memphis and the Detroit area, before they left Michigan for Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. After service in the Marines and work as a model and in commercials, he broke through on television as Sergeant Sam Troy, the leader of a desert jeep patrol in North Africa, in ABC's The Rat Patrol (1966–1968), a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He then appeared with John Wayne in El Dorado and Chisum and, in the 1970s and early 1980s, became a busy lead in action, horror and slasher films, including Day of the Animals, City of the Living Dead and Pieces. He was married to actress Lynda Day George.
