The Detroit story
After bouncing between several teams and G League stints, Wood was claimed off waivers by the Pistons in July 2019. Detroit gave him a real opportunity, and during the 2019–20 season he broke out as a legitimate NBA rotation player, posting career-best scoring and rebounding numbers that established him as a valuable young big man. That breakout made him a trade asset: in November 2020 the Pistons signed him to a three-year, $41 million contract and immediately traded him to the Houston Rockets in a deal that brought back Trevor Ariza and the draft rights that became Isaiah Stewart. Wood went on to a solid career as a stretch big for several more NBA teams, with his time in Detroit remembered as the turning point that launched him from journeyman to regular starter.
