The Detroit story
Webber grew up in Detroit and attended Detroit Country Day School from 1987 to 1991, leading the team to three state championships and becoming the state's most recruited player since Magic Johnson. He stayed home for college, joining four other freshmen at the University of Michigan in 1991 to form the "Fab Five", who reached the NCAA championship game in both 1992 and 1993 wearing baggy shorts and black socks that changed the look of college basketball. A federal investigation later found Webber had taken money from a Detroit-area booster while in high school and college, and the NCAA vacated Michigan's records from those years; Webber was banned from the program until 2013. His NBA career, mostly with Sacramento, brought five All-Star selections, and it closed with a brief homecoming: in 2007–2008 he played for the Detroit Pistons before retiring. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 and later reconciled publicly with the university.
