The Detroit story
After four part-time seasons in Toronto and a year with Japan's Hanshin Tigers, Fielder signed a two-year contract with Detroit in January 1990. He responded with one of the great surprise seasons in baseball: 51 home runs, the first 50-homer season in the majors since 1977 and the first in the American League since Mantle and Maris in 1961. Detroit fans called him "Big Daddy" for his size, his smile and his calm temperament. He led the league in runs batted in three straight years and put together four consecutive seasons of 30 homers and 100 RBIs; no major leaguer hit more home runs between 1990 and 1995. He is the only Tiger ever to clear the left-field roof at Tiger Stadium. He was traded to the Yankees in 1996. His son Prince, who grew up around Tiger Stadium, later starred for Detroit as well.
