The Detroit story
Carvin Winans was born in Detroit, the fourth child and twin brother of Marvin in the ten-child family of David "Pop" and Delores Winans. He grew up singing in church and in the 1970s joined his brothers Ronald, Marvin and Michael in the Testimonial Singers, renamed the Winans in 1975. After Andraé Crouch signed them to Light Records, their 1981 debut Introducing The Winans launched a crossover gospel sound that reached R&B radio. During his first five years in the group Carvin wrote songs and began producing some of their albums. In 1987 the Winans sang backing vocals on Michael Jackson's Bad, and over a 45-year career Carvin collected five Grammy Awards and three gold records, working with Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston and Anita Baker, among others.
