The Detroit story
Carla Harvey grew up in the Detroit suburbs, attending Glenn Levey Middle School in Southfield and then Mercy High School and Harrison High School in Farmington Hills. She has said that as a biracial kid in the Detroit area she was teased for loving hard rock and metal, and that seeing African American musicians play that music gave her the strength to follow it. After moving to Los Angeles she worked as an entertainment reporter and TV performer, then co-founded the metal band Butcher Babies, sharing lead vocals with Heidi Shepherd on several albums and international tours. She also earned a degree in mortuary science and worked as an embalmer and funeral director, and she writes comics and fiction, including the novel Death and Other Dances (2014).
