The Detroit story
Woodruff was born in 1961 in Bloomfield Hills, the Oakland County suburb north of Detroit, to parents who worked in real estate, and graduated from Cranbrook Kingswood School in 1979. He went on to Colgate University and the University of Michigan Law School and practiced corporate law before switching to journalism after working as an interpreter for CBS News in China during the 1989 Tiananmen protests. He joined ABC News in 1996 and in January 2006 became co-anchor of World News Tonight. Weeks later a roadside bomb in Iraq left him with a severe brain injury. His long recovery, told in the book In an Instant, led him and his wife Lee to create the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which supports injured service members and veterans; he returned to reporting for ABC.
