The Detroit story
Bob McAdoo was already a former MVP and three-time scoring champion when Boston traded him to Detroit in September 1979. He joined a rebuilding Pistons team that finished 16–66, one of the worst records in franchise history, and still averaged 21.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in 58 games alongside fellow Hall of Famer Bob Lanier. An injury limited him early in the 1980–81 season; after a dispute with coach Scotty Robertson over his fitness to play, general manager Jack McCloskey told him not to return, and Detroit waived him in March 1981 after just six games that season. McAdoo went on to win two more championships with the "Showtime" Lakers and entered the Hall of Fame in 2000.
