The Detroit story
Blake Griffin had already established himself as one of the NBA's most explosive dunkers and a perennial All-Star with the Los Angeles Clippers when Detroit acquired him in a blockbuster trade on January 29, 2018. He quickly became the focal point of the Pistons offense, switching to his college number 23 since Rip Hamilton's No. 32 was already retired by the club. In his Pistons debut he posted 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and in January 2019 he put together the best scoring month by any Pistons player, breaking a record Isiah Thomas had held since 1983. On March 28, 2019, he became the fifth Piston ever to score 50 points in a game. Recurring knee injuries limited him after that, and Detroit bought out his contract in March 2021.
