The Detroit story
Rufus Johnson, known as Bizarre, was born in Detroit and came up in the city's 1990s underground hip-hop scene. In 1995 Proof invited him to join D12, a crew built from neighborhood friends and local rappers including Kuniva, Kon Artis and Bugz, with Proof's longtime friend Eminem as a member. When Eminem broke through, D12 followed: their debut Devil's Night (2001) went straight to No. 1, and D12 World (2004) repeated the feat. Bizarre became the group's most outrageous voice, known for shock-comedy verses and a larger-than-life persona, and he released solo albums including Hannicap Circus (2005). He never left: he still lives in Detroit, where he keeps recording, collaborating with local artists and making social media content.
