The Detroit story
The Pistons made Bailey Howell the second overall pick in the 1959 NBA draft, and he immediately became a force inside, averaging 17.8 points and 10.5 rebounds as a rookie. Over five seasons in Detroit his scoring kept climbing, peaking at 23.6 points and 14.4 rebounds in 1960–61, and he led the Pistons to the playoffs three straight years, though Detroit lost each time to the Los Angeles Lakers. Known as "Buckshot" for his second-effort scoring around the basket, Howell was traded to Baltimore in June 1964, then went on to win two NBA championships with the Boston Celtics. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
