The Detroit story
McKinlay was born in Detroit and graduated in 1950 from Cooley High School on the city's northwest side alongside his twin brother John. He went on to represent the United States at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he was part of the American boat that won the silver medal in the coxless fours rowing event. He spent his life in the Detroit area and died in the nearby suburb of Royal Oak in 2009, closing a life that began and ended within a few miles of the same city.
