The Detroit story
James Lowery was raised on Detroit's east side by parents from Pembroke, North Carolina, the heart of the Lumbee nation; his mother and aunt taught him Cherokee and Lumbee legends. He started making music as a child, wrote songs from 13, and by 15 neighborhood kids were paying to see him perform in his garage. In 1995 he formed Krazy Klan with his friend Lavel, releasing two independent albums while working at a Chrysler parts plant, where an accident cost him part of a finger. Going solo as Native Funk, he released Rain from the Sun, then met Blaze Ya Dead Homie, took the name Anybody Killa and toured as an opener for Insane Clown Posse and Twiztid. Signed to Psychopathic Records, he released Hatchet Warrior (2003), which reached No. 4 on the Billboard independent chart; its lyrics are full of Faygo, Detroit shout-outs and Juggalo lore. He later set up his own label, Native World.
