The Detroit story
After multiple knee surgeries threatened to end his career, McDyess signed with Detroit and reinvented himself as an efficient mid-range scorer and dependable rebounder off the bench. In his first season he helped the Pistons win the Eastern Conference and reach the 2005 NBA Finals, where they lost to San Antonio in seven games. He remained a steady contributor for several seasons, then, after his career had taken him elsewhere, returned to Detroit for a short stint in 2009. Teammates and Detroit fans valued him as one of the league's most respected professionals during a period when the Pistons were consistent Eastern Conference contenders.
