The Detroit story
Angel Haze, who has performed as ROES since 2022, was born in Detroit into a military family and spent their childhood in the city. They have described growing up inside a strict Pentecostal church community in Detroit where secular music, jewelry and contact with outsiders were forbidden, an experience that later fed their writing. At 15 the family left for Brooklyn, New York, and after further moves they began rapping seriously. The 2012 mixtape Reservation drew wide praise for its speed and candor and led to a deal with Universal Republic. Their debut album Dirty Gold (2013) included the singles “Echelon (It's My Way)” and “Battle Cry”, the latter featuring Sia. They use they/them pronouns.
