The Detroit story
Copp was born in Ann Arbor to a family steeped in Michigan hockey and figure skating, his mother a University of Michigan figure-skating coach and his father his youth coach. As a boy he played for the Detroit Compuware club, one of the state's premier youth programs, before a three-season college career at the University of Michigan, including a stint as team captain. Drafted by Winnipeg in 2013, he built a solid NHL career before returning to his home state in July 2022, when he signed a five-year, 28-million-dollar contract with the Red Wings. He has been a regular in Detroit's lineup since, working through injuries including a torn pectoral muscle in his third Red Wings season.
