The Detroit story
Hutchinson was born in Plymouth, in western Wayne County, and grew up in the Detroit suburbs. At Divine Child High School in Dearborn he played nearly everywhere on the field, from defensive end to long snapper. At the University of Michigan he became a unanimous All-American in 2021 and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting, leading the Wolverines to a Big Ten title. The Lions chose him with the second overall pick in 2022, and the local kid quickly became a fan favorite at Ford Field and a symbol of the franchise's turnaround under coach Dan Campbell. He was named to the All-Rookie Team, made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and 2025 and earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2025, recovering from a broken leg suffered in 2024. For many Detroiters, his story is that of a boy from the suburbs playing for the team he grew up with.
