The Detroit story
Hammoud was born and raised in Dearborn in a Lebanese Shia Muslim family. He studied biology at the University of Michigan–Dearborn and public health and business in Ann Arbor, then worked as a health-care advisor at the Henry Ford Health System. After the sudden death of his older brother he ran for the Michigan House in 2016 and represented Dearborn's 15th district from 2017 to 2021. In 2021, during severe summer flooding, he organized hundreds of volunteers to help clean flooded homes, and that November he was elected mayor, the city's first Arab American and Muslim mayor and one of its youngest. One of his first acts was to create a municipal health department, the first set up voluntarily by a Michigan city. He was re-elected in November 2025 with about 71 percent of the vote.
