Come November in Michigan, plenty of hunters head to the woods for deer season, and whoever stays home gets jokingly called a deer widow. This weekend is for them, and for anyone who wants a girls' getaway. Northville and Plymouth are two charming small towns west of Detroit, close to each other, with everything you need: a wine bar, a live-music lounge, whiskey, an old movie house, theater and karaoke.
Plymouth Township · Five Mile Road, former St. John's Seminary grounds
Check in to the Romanesque buildings of a 1949 Catholic seminary that trained priests until 1988; the chapel, dedicated in 1955, has about fifty stained-glass windows. 118 rooms, free parking, and profits go to charity.
↓ Stay put: the wine bar is downstairs at the resort.
An underground wine bar and tapas lounge at the resort with a Wine Spectator award-winning list, open to the public too. The perfect first evening: a toast, small plates and no rush.
Past a red light and velvet ropes, this speakeasy-style cocktail lounge in Northville Square brings in metro Detroit cover and party bands while people dance by their tables, with no cover charge. Dress up!
Whiskey tasting at Highline Spirits' tasting room inside a restored 1893 pharmacy building. Cocktails are on the menu too, and if you book ahead you can join a cocktail or whiskey class.
↓ A few minutes' walk to Kellogg Park on Penniman Avenue.
A single-screen 1941 Streamline Moderne movie house facing Kellogg Park under a green neon PENN sign, showing classics, independent and second-run films and the odd live show. See what's playing that day.
A professional theater with 143 seats, rearranged for every show, staging five plays and musicals a year. The idea was sketched on a napkin at a Northville coney island, and Metro Times readers named it Best Small Professional Theatre in 2025.
A long-running dive bar on Northville's Main Street with pool, darts and a jukebox, known around town for its karaoke nights. Pick a group song and give it everything.
A farewell meal in Plymouth's Old Village at a family-owned restaurant styled on classic supper clubs, which opens on Sunday mornings too. Recap the weekend here before the hunters get home.
↓ Head home from here, by cab if anyone's been drinking.
Good to know
The Wine Grotto is closed Sundays and Mondays and NOMI Lounge Sunday through Tuesday, so the big nights are Friday and Saturday.
NOMI Lounge is 21+ and asks guests to dress up.
The Wagon Wheel's karaoke nights vary depending on who you ask, so call first: (248) 349-8686.
Check the Tipping Point and Penn Theatre schedules on their own sites; whoever's drinking doesn't drive, so grab a cab between towns.
