A lot of Detroit's best bites started at a counter, a window or a street corner. This Saturday starts in a Mexicantown tamale kitchen and runs through Eastern Market fried fish, a charity dessert shop at Campus Martius and a Cass Corridor container food hall to a Corktown Thai restaurant that began as a food truck and a mangonada shop that began on a street corner. Order small and plan on a few short drives.

Saturday

  1. 07:30

    Evie's Tamales

    Mexicantown

Breakfast in Mexicantown, where Evie started making tamales from her mother's and grandmother's recipes in 1981; today her grandson Eugene carries on the family tradition. Tamales come in pork, spicy pork, chicken, bean, cheese, jalapeño, chorizo and a sweet pineapple-raisin version, fresh or frozen, and the breakfast burritos are a local favorite.

A few steps along Bagley Street.

  2. 08:15

    La Michoacana Tortilla Bakery

    Mexicantown / Southwest Detroit

Tortillas have been made here since 1940, now by the family's fourth generation: flour, white corn and yellow corn tortillas plus chips pressed daily from stone-ground, non-GMO corn. A pack of fresh tortillas makes a great takeaway; call (313) 554-4450 for hours.

About 10 minutes by car northeast to Eastern Market.

  3. 09:30

    Eastern Market

    Eastern Market

On Saturdays the sheds carry packaged foods and handmade goods alongside the growers, and food spots line the streets around the historic sheds. Just graze here; it's a long day.

A 5-minute walk along Russell Street.

  4. 11:30

    Al's Fresh Fish & Chicken

    Eastern Market

An Eastern Market institution by the sheds since 1975: fried and baked fish, shrimp, hot wings and halal fried chicken, and if you're cooking at home they'll cut a whole fish into steaks or fillets on the spot. Open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday; call ahead to order.

About 5 minutes by car downtown to Campus Martius.

  5. 13:30

    Detroit Water Ice Factory

    Downtown

Dessert for a good cause: author Mitch Albom and his charity SAY Detroit opened it in 2015, and every dollar of profit goes to SAY Detroit's programs for Detroiters in need. Philly-style water ice has less sugar, more fruit and no dairy, in 20-plus flavors; the Motown Twist layers it with soft-serve.

About 5 minutes by car to Peterboro Street in the Cass Corridor.

  6. 15:30

    Detroit Shipping Company

    Cass Corridor / Midtown

A food hall and beer garden built from shipping containers: six restaurants, two full bars and several event rooms on Peterboro Street, voted Detroit's best food hall by Metro Times readers in 2023–2025. It's open noon to midnight on Saturdays and all-ages during the day.

About 10 minutes by car to Michigan Avenue in Corktown.

  7. 17:30

    Takoi

    Corktown

Dinner with a food-truck success story: Takoi started as a food truck called KATOI in 2014, became an Ann Arbor pop-up, and now cooks modern Thai food with Michigan seasonality in Corktown, using produce from its own HiO Farm.

About 12 minutes by car southwest to Lawndale Street.

  8. 19:30

    Mangonadas del Barrio

    Southwest Detroit

End with a street-corner story: in 2008, out of work, Antonio 'Tony' Hernandez bought a pallet of mangos, set up on a corner and sold nearly all of it in two hours; a neighbor turned the leftovers into mangonadas, and the family shop grew from there. Mangonadas with chamoy and Tajín, aguas frescas and filled churros; open until 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

Good to know

  • Evie's is closed Sundays and open 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday, with the dining room closing at 3.
  • At Eastern Market, Zeff's Coney Island serves coneys and all-day breakfast from 6 a.m., and Frank's Deli stacks Wigley's corned beef sandwiches; on Saturdays, get there early.
  • Quick downtown bite on Woodward: Mom's Spaghetti's walk-up window runs 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Sunday.
  • Urbanrest Brewing's Ferndale taproom hosts rotating food trucks; check the calendar on the brewery's site.
